HE for Social Justice

STRIVING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE is the MOST VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION we can all make in life.

It is the commonly held belief that equity in education is a powerful tool to help bring about Social Justice. But we need to add, only if the chosen pedagogies also enable the practice of giving voice to one’s values.

Last year’s teacher strikes in the UK are a case in point. A bottling up or stifling of ‘voice’ regarding work conditions, over far too long a time, has led to a ‘tipping point’ of overwhelm and burnout.

We are all learners, and learners need role models: through watching, listening, and copying, we grow in both confidence and ability. Where, instead of constantly and consistently giving voice, and encouraging the same in others, we allow instead a festering and a diminishment of potential, how can we see ourselves as having something to contribute towards Social Justice for this world?

Where there is Social Justice, there is Wellbeing. The way LifeRoute sees it is, if we wait for Social Justice in order to experience Wellbeing, it will be a long haul. What if we shorten the route by first tackling Wellbeing through the development of our innermost Values and consequently our Character? To the extent that we always and consistently give voice to our values? Is this not how we can then move our consciousness forward in a way where choices made are always intelligent, equitable and caring?

And if not from our hallowed halls of universities and business schools, then from where?
