We often think belonging gives us confidence — but what if it’s our ability to challenge that proves whether we truly feel we belong?
Belonging can support confidence, but it’s unreliable if it depends on others.
Self-respect is the stable foundation. That’s what enables challenge — even when belonging feels uncertain.
Is it important to also feel that we matter?
You can feel like you belong in a group, but still feel that your voice doesn’t matter. And when that happens, challenge becomes much harder.
Self-respect is where the focus is on who you are – where you stay true to your own values, standards and dignity, regardless of external situations and outcomes – the stuff that happens which can so easily cause your self-esteem to fluctuate.
Before you decide whether to stay silent or to challenge, pause and ask: “Am I acting in line with my values – my self-respect?”
That question alone can change everything.
Belonging can support confidence — but self-respect is what sustains the courage to challenge.
